What is a day? A day is simply how we perceive to quantify time. But is a day really a day? The bible teaches that it took God 6 days to create the world and he rested on the 7th. Does this mean that these were six 24 hour periods, six rotations of the earth on its axis? Or could the word day just refer to a period of time, just as our English word day only really refers to a period of time that we quantified? A biblical day could refer to an era of time, like the Stone Age.
The days of creation that are described in the book of Genesis are called Yoms. This word was then translated to be ‘days’. The reason it has been translated to be the word day is because later in the Book it says there was an evening and there was a morning. However, morning and evening are themselves just concepts. A morning is just the word that we used to signify the start of a day. Where does it say that morning has to be when the sun rises? Why could it not just be the start of something? We often use the word twilight to mean the winding down of something, ex. the twilight of my career. This is using twilight out of its context of time to mean something else entirely. So the morning and evening of each day of creation could just be its start and its end.
If each creation day is really an era, which is an undefined period of time, who knows how long each one really lasted? How long did it take the Earth and the Sun to be created? How long did it take the seas to fill? How long did it take the animals to inhabit or evolve? And how long did God rest? God might still be resting. He may be waiting for the rapture to shine upon those who he deems worthy. Harold Camping may have been right if the day of rapture was really the era of rapture. May 21st could have just been the start to the rapture that takes a period of time to complete. It may take a while for the saved to make their way to salvation so as not to cause a panic among the condemned. Imagine the social unrest that would ensue if a vast number of the population just disappeared. So maybe, just maybe, we are indeed going through the day of rapture. We simply do not know how to comprehend that it is actually taking place because we are caught up in our literal meaning of a time period instead of being open to God’s interpretation.
When faced with adversity, take comfort in the knowledge that time will tell and the righteous will be rewarded as it has been foretold. “Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.” James 5: 7-8
